Obituary Notice of Dr. Vadivelu Vasandakumar
We regret to inform that Hartleyite Dr. Vadivelu Vasandakumar MD FRCP FRACP (Rtd. Consultant Physician) passed away on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2025 in Nugegoda, Colombo, at the age of 75.
Dr. Vasandakumar had spent most of his life living and working in the UK (Milton Keynes and Surrey), before residing in Jaffna & Colombo in the past three years.
He was the son of the late Thambiah Vadivelu (retired Principal of J/Yakkaru Maha Vidyalayam) and retired teacher, Mrs Gnanasoudaram Vadivelu (J/Gnannasariyar College).
He was a loving father to Rashmi & Dilini, eldest brother to Vijeyakumar, Sugumar, Jeyakumar, Vasanthakumary, Santhakumar, Navakumar and Vijayakumary, father-in-law of Nikhil Patel & Athesan (Gopi) Gunaratnasingam, and adoring grandfather to Jaimin, Naya & Rian (Rashmi) and Shayaana & Aamalan (Dilini).
He studied at Hartley College from 1958 to 1967- Hartleyite - O/L Batch: 1965. He topped the NPTA examination from Hartley College and got the best results for Hartley by achieving four distinctions at the OL.
Dr. Vasandakumar studied Medicine (MBBS Hons.) at the University of Peradeniya, Kandy from 1968 to 1973, becoming a doctor at the age of 26. He won a gold medal for topping the batch at the 2nd MBBS exam.
He then completed an MD in Internal Medicine at the University of Colombo by the age of 28. He continued his career in Brunei and UK, attaining his fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), as well as attaining his FRACP qualification, a prestigious postgraduate qualification in Australia for specialists in Internal Medicine. He was a very well-respected Clinician and colleague to all that met him.
During his time in the UK, he was actively involved in the affairs of HCPPA and presided as the Vice President of HCPPA UK in the mid-90s.
He was an avid player of Bridge, playing and winning in tournaments since 1990. He also played Badminton on a regular basis, both of which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Dr Vasandakumar's email address contained vk6848, the '6848' having been taken from what was his Hartley College Index Number, an indicator of his immense pride and fond memories of the school.
Dr. Vasandakumar is survived by his two daughters, Rashmi & Dilini, his sons-in-law Nikhil & Gopi and his five grandchildren.
