I am happy that the Hartley College Past Pupils' Association
of Toronto is organising a Kalai Vizha in connection with
their Annual Celebrations. I congratulate the organisers on
their foresight and effort to preserve our identity as
Tamils.
We are dispersed in different parts of the world, and as
such, we have two tasks.
First we must fit ourselves into the societies in
which we find ourselves, as for example, by accepting
their work ethic.
Secondly, we must preserve some of our values - respect for
elders, sanctity of the institution of marriage, our arts of
music and dance. Parents must ensure their children speak
Tamil, read and write it, and themselves set the example by
studying the classics like the Kural. In some places, Tamil
classes have been organised for children as well as for
parents, and arrangements made for Tamil to be a subject at
the School Leaving Certificate Examinations.
I should like to be present at the Vizha and to share in the
joys of reunion and revival of hte memories of the happy
past. But my health does not permit. I send greetings to
every Hartleyite, and wish the Celebration every success.
