Outstation candidates were in the majority among the top five scorers in each stream of the GCE Advanced Level 2007 Examination results released yesterday.

Of the top 20, 14 are from outstation while only six are from Colombo’s top schools.

Two were first in the Bio Science and Arts streams while Colombo schools secured first places in Maths and Commerce.

Thirimadura Charith Yasendra Mendis of Royal College, Colombo recorded top marks in the Maths stream and the highest Z – score 3.3349 in all streams. Ahangama Vithanage Irosha Chandimal of the St. Aloysius College, Galle came first in Bio Science, while Tharani Gavisha Mattaka Gamage of  Visaka BMV, Colombo was the top scorer in Commerce. Nadeesha Hansamali Epa of Christ Church BMV, Baddegama scored highest marks in Arts stream.

Nadeesha Hansamali, who became the first all island top scorer produced by the Baddegama Christ Church BMV, scoring 2.557 average of Z Score in Arts stream, told The Island she aspires to become a lawyer. While thanking her teachers and parents for their support, Hansamali said that she trained herself by answering past papers within the stipulated time.

Irosha Chandimal scored 3.1289 in Bio Science said since his primary classes he wanted to be a doctor someday. His principal D. P. L Gunasekera said Chandimal was exceptional and everybody expected that he would be among the top ten. "Becoming the all island best is amazing and we truly are proud of him," Gunasekera said.

The best scorer in Commerce stream Tharani Gavisha said: "I worked hard and thank my school teachers. Without their encouragement and untiring assistance I could not have achieved this." She had scored 2.6917.

Charith Yasendra, who scored all island best results in Maths said that he had gone for additional tuition classes and could manage his time between studies and pastimes including watching cricket. "My parents never blamed me for watching TV because they knew that I could do well in the exam," he said.

Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe said that applications for re-scrutinization of answer scripts would be called within two weeks. Outstation students lead the Colombo top school candidates in results, he said.

Chairman of the University Grants Commission said that cut off Z scores would be released within two weeks after releasing the results of re-correction of answer scripts of those who apply for re-scrutinisation of the marks they obtained at the Exam.
